Abstract

Introduction: Despite the importance of school feeding, and to the nutrition of children and adolescents in school environments in recent years, there is not evidence on literature review that explores the role of the school canteen as a scenario that allows social learning, the formation of habits and cultural practices associated with the food. Object: to identify, based on a systematic review, studies related to elements and conditions attributable to the experience of the school canteen as a learning and socialization setting, and its relationship with problems associated with poor use of food and its waste, school absenteeism and academic performance. Methodology: The PRISMA 2020 guide was followed to select the most relevant articles from the exploration of the keywords: school meal, scholar canteen and food waste in the databases: Scopus, Ebsco, ScienceDirect, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar. Results and discussion: The 119 selected studies were grouped and analyzed into six lines of research: social-cultural, biological-nutritional, waste, spatial, political, and academic. The studies highlight the importance of school feeding in social learning, the formation of nutritional habits and in academic successes. The low consumption of fruits and vegetables that lead to a high level of food waste is identified as a central problem in most of the analysed studies. Conclusions: Few research has been developed in relation to the school canteen and its spatial elements in its role to making this school site a setting for learning.
