Business strategies of the shipping companies in the new scenario of Shipping Alliances

Abstract

Introduction: Maritime transport sector has always been characterized by cooperative behavior, through collaboration and vertical and horizontal integration, in which shipping companies are presented as the main actors onstage at maritime concentration. They have chosen to develop a strategy of alliances that allows them to benefit from economies of scale and expand its geographical coverage through planning and joint coordination of ships on a global scale; offering a better service.

Objective: This article aims to elucidate the possible strategies to be followed by the shipping companies to continue on the path of growth and to achieve greater stability in an environment characterized by globalization, constantly changing and evolving.

Method: So the internal characteristics and the external situation (SWOT) are analyzed through analysis CAME, on the basis of the information obtained to a Delphi panel.

Results: The strengths acquired by the shipping companies, which make up the various alliances, lead them to establish a defensive strategy (Strengths - Threats) - offensive (Strengths - Opportunities).

Conclusions: The horizontal cooperation and integration of the shipping companies has created a scenario of concentration, in which the most important shipping companies (top 10) belong to one of the established alliances. As a result of this concentration, the carriers have greater bargaining power that allows them to mitigate fluctuations in the price of oil and take advantage of new market opportunities such as new technologies applied to the tracking and manipulation of goods.
