The Kaufmann family and american modernity: Fallingwater and Kaufmann House

Abstract

The role played by the Kaufmann family as patron of the arts on the North American cultural scene is made invisible in the role of two of the most important modern houses of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater House, and the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra. This article reveals the criteria and objective needs of the clients during the commissioning, construction and appropriation of the houses, which, beyond financial financing, undoubtedly places the Kaufmann as pioneers who, actively interacting with the authors of these Iconic pieces of domestic architecture, they adopted and promulgated new ways of life, modern and revolutionary for the time.
